Europe Lab 2024 Explores “Changing Tides” in Jáchymov, Czechia

The historic town of Jáchymov, nestled in the Ore Mountains of Czechia, set the stage for Europe Lab 2024, an annual forum that unites young leaders and changemakers from across Europe. This year’s theme, Changing Tides, found a powerful resonance in the town’s layered history, which participants explored through visits to former mines and prison camps.

Jáchymov, once a hub for mining and the site where radioactivity was first discovered, has a darker side as well—it served as a political prison colony during the 20th century. This dual legacy provided a poignant backdrop for workshops on climate change, displacement, and the enduring impact of historical traumas on European communities.

“We managed to apply new skills to old traumas, which sparked healing and a coming to terms with the heavy past—and maybe even the present times too,” said facilitator Tomas Bouska. “It’s important for strengthening the civic immunity of future leaders and active members of local communities.”

Europe Lab 2024 was made possible with the support of the European Commission and the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ In Transition programme. We thank all participants, contributors, and facilitators for their dedication to fostering dialogue and change.

The countdown to Europe Lab 2025 begins! Stay tuned as we prepare for another year of collaboration and inspiration.
